LUMOS

Never a dull day.  Went to sleep at 4-4:30 AM this morning after having yet another awesome-packed conversation on skype chat, slept through a power outage this monring, woke up and worked on Christmas gifts, felt really sore, sick, and dizzy in the late afternoon and crashed until around 8 PM, only to have the electricity go out (again) in the middle of microwaving a frozen dinner.  Of course.  I spend hours sleeping in the dark, and when I finally wake up, the power goes out.  >.<
....
Good thing that I have my 2 AA Cell Mini Maglite Flashlight that can convert to candle mode!  Seriously.  Along with the [much] larger literally-bright-as-freaking-daylight/disaster-ready-and-good-self-defense-weapon flashlight, they may be the most useful and thoughtful gifts that I've ever gotten from a guy, I feel like I can never thank him enough (and have repeatedly done so, and is likely very tired of it, perhaps to the point of regretting having given it to me xP ).  I've had to use it so many times already, it's the perfect small flashlight.  If you don't have an excellent small flashlight, you should really invest in this one.   Flashlight specs

LUMOS!  UTEVO GRAN LUX!
So while I was waiting for the power to go back on, thanks to my tiny flashlight and 2 candles, I pan-heated the half-frozen tray of Chicken Alfredo Florentine in the total non-darkness while my mom worked on a crossword puzzle and my sister played Chuzzle Place (pffft) on her new laptop.  It's times like these that make me and my sister realize how much we rely on the internet. ... And how often our power and internet goes down.  >.<

I was content making hand shadows on my kitchen cabinet.
Look, it's a wolf!  Now it's a....Geodude?  ... aww, screw this.
After the power finally came back around 9:30 PM, I went on Facebook and saw my news feed comprised almost entirely of posts relating to power outages.  My family and I previously thought that it was just my neighborhood, but apparently, it was all over the island.  According to the news, the power outages were due to one or two transformers blowing out and the Hawaiian Electric Company purposely turning off the power to reduce the strain on them.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ INTERNET   ★★★★★★★
REDDIT GIFTS

Ah, Reddit.  The source of profound amusement, random education, both deeply heartwarming and disturbing stories and pictures, and everything in between.  Up until now, I have been content to casually lurk and laugh heartily at the posts (and more often, the comments), but this early morning, the level of regard and fear that I have for this site has been deepened considerably after learning about a truly epic event, the Reddit Secret Santa Gift Exchange .

From what I heard from my friend who is participating (and got matched up with a hot Asian gamer model chick,  of course that would happen to you  >_>  ) in this year's exchange, this is the world's biggest secret santa exchange.  Some of the gifts highlights of last year's exchange have included things like a pile of cash, kindles, ipods, an electric guitar, consoles/games, a 50" HDTV, professional portraits/paintings, being serenaded by Jimmy Fallon and the Roots, but also weird things, like paperclips, six 22 pound boxes of beer, a box of dirt, Moais, ever issue of Playboy since the recipient's birth year (1986), hookahs, drug (and *ahem*)-related stuff.

Ideally, the objective once you get your Reddit secret santa recipient is to stalk their posts/comments/facebook/etc, to try and get to know them and their interests/etc. as well as possible before choosing what will, hopefully, be thoughtful and awesome gifts. (You know, like how you're supposed to choose gifts for really close friends/lovers, except for complete strangers) But according to said friend, a lot of people just get gift cards and $20 bills or something too.  ...Even so, I'm thinking this is definitely something that I want to take part in.  *w*

According to the Reddit gift site, they have other exchanges, like Arbitrary Day, " a celebration of nothing in particular. The goal is to have fun and make others happy."  Sounds right up my alley.

Hey, that reminds me.  I still haven't heard from my dA "Gotta Craft Em All" group Secret Santa Exchange... Still have until the 15th to hear from them.  *waku waku*  >w<

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ VOCALOID   ★★★★★★★

After skimming through my subscribed dA group journal entries, the post about the new vocaloid IA caught my eye.  She's based off of the Japanese singer, Lia, and the official song demo is her cover of "Tori no Uta" from Aria, which Lia sang.  I must say, I'm quite impressed.  Even though there are still heavy artificial traces, the line between synthetic and real voices is definitely becoming more blurred.  If you don't pay too much attention while you listen to her song, you might not realize that it's synthetically composed!  (....maybe.)

In other vocaloid news, there are the new Spanish-singing vocaloids, Bruno and Clara, and English vocaloid Oliver, whose voice is based off a 13 year old British boy.  Shota fangirls, rejoice.  *stares at my sister*

Panta is coming to town~

As I lay on the steps outside and stared up at the sky, I thought,
"Mannn, why is the sky so blue?..."  * A *

Apparently, the air coming out of the window in front of the table where I was crafting all night was colder than I thought, because when I woke up the next morning, I found myself congested and with a slight cold relapse.  = n =

So today was super low-key, lay outside in the sun for a long time, feeling like a content lizard on a rock.  But after I went back in, I started to feel pretty feverish and had to rest more.  x.x  After I felt better in the evening, made more christmas cards!... not very "traditional" ones, but hey!  Hopefully awesome.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ ANIME   ★★★★★★★

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Shin Kyoto Hen
映画『るろうに剣心 明治剣客浪漫譚 新京都編 前編』予告編

Old news by now, but next month, a new two-part remake of Rurouni Kenshin’s Kyoto arc will be coming out in theaters in Japan to celebrate the series' 15 year anniversary.

OH, HELL YES!!  * A *

"Studio DEEN and director, Kazuhiro Furuhashi, both of whom worked on the original anime series will be working on the new series. The original series voice cast will reprise their roles as well, save for the late Hirotaka Suzuoki, who voiced Saito Hajime. Ken Narita will be voicing Saito in the remake."

And... what's this?

"A live-action Rurouni Kenshin film is being produced by Warner Bros. Japan for release in 2012."

OH GOD.  Please let this not be a redux of the live Dragon Ball Z movie...   >___>;;;

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ CRAFTING   ★★★★★★★

I saw something epic on CraftGawker today.  PANTA.
Which may or may not have inspired me to make a holiday card based on that idea...

I hope that Panta visits me this year... ; w ;

Christmas 2011 Crafting

Otaku/etc and mini bulb ornaments go on tomorrow~
Perfect way to end a long day-  putting the mini lights and garland on our miniature tree while my sister played Josh Groban's "O Holy Night"... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.  What positively ethereal voice, my stress levels and general world-weariness decreased almost instantly.  <3

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ FOOD/SNACKS   ★★★★★★★

Sorry!!!  ; A ;

The only flaw of panda bread- you feel guilty slicing and/or eating it.  (No, Habib, you're not showing this to Tori as proof that I'm a panda hater or eater!  >_> )  It was tasty, though.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ CRAFTING   ★★★★★★★

After getting up early to participate in my first serious bidding war (I came up short in putting in a final bid by around half a second) on eBay, spent some time chatting with Habib online before going outside to sunbathe and wander around in the yard for a while to recharge, get fresh air and sunshine.

A pretty Hawaiian flower plant in my yard, not sure what the name is
(even though I took a course in Hawaiian botany  ; w ;  Shame, shame. )

Unexpectedly obtained and got to know a new texting buddy from Gaia a little better, then dedicated the rest of the evening primarily to working on my Christmas card list while wrapping up day 3 of my Words with Friends weekend marathon with Belle and bothering panda buddy #2 on Pingchat.  (Bother bother bother!... but in a dead-ish sort of way)

By the time the day was over, my hair, skin, and chair all had glitter stuck in/to them, and I completed a total of 4 cards, the last of which required quite a bit of work (and the main reason why I still have glitter falling out of my hair ), but I'm very pleased at how it turned out.  I'm really hoping that my recipient will be pleased as well...  >o<
My Christmas list...!  o w o

My primary card-making supply list:  Assorted colors and patterns of cardstock, ribbons, glitter, tacky glue, assorted die cut shapes, glue dots, scissors, paper cutter

Tomorrow is another busy day...!  @ o @;;

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ RANDOM THOUGHTS   ★★★★★★★

While I was getting to know my new texting friend from Gaia (I had talked to her a bit in a thread a little while ago, so she wasn't just a random person, lol), I suddenly got the desire to try and make/have a [reasonably] good friend in every US state.  Darn it, Teresa, if only we stayed penpals, I could say that I have one in Missouri.  But not anymore.  v_v  So what I do have so far is California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, and now Virginia.  Eight out of fifty.  I could include my high school friends to add more states, but I'd rather make new ones.  But that means 42 more friends? hmmm.  Maybe this can just be a life-long goal.  I think that my traveling journal project should take precedent.

Actually... when I was brainstorming about said project, it hit me that I could try to arrange it so that I could possibly make new friends - since my current number of contacts in different states is limited, I could have people who participate have any of their friends write something about themselves in my book and optionally leave some sort of  contact info (e.g.- email, etc) for other participants interested in trying to be friends with them.

But yeah, still brainstorming... I'm hoping to get this project off the ground by early next year!  =D

....Also, I need to make time to play Maple story!!! There's a Thanksgiving quest that I never got to do.  And my cash shop itemssssss...!!  Dx   Man, I'm so tired that my brain can't tell what I'm looking at for a long time.  x_x  Panda out.

Finally uploaded the photo for GottaCatchEmAll's Secret Santa Exchange, messaged my recipient, received her address, so Spheal is ready to be shipped out on the next post office run.  yaaaaaay~!

After seeing this rubber carved stamp on Etsy, I decided to
go hunt around the house for some old erasers...
...and after having succeeded in making a Katamari cousin stamp,
then increasingly messing it up while trying to fix a flaw, I
ended up having to completely re-carve it on the other side.
Custom gift wrap, here I come...!  ;D

Stay Tuned

One of my favorite photos that I took in 2009, at Moanalua Gardens, one of my favorite
places to go to unwind and relax.  If you visit me here one day, I will probably want to take you here.
There's a gorgeous koi pond, bridges, an old Japanese temple with bamboo thickets, and
the park itself is filled with large shady trees and flowering tropical flower bushes.
[Please do not use without permission  (c) Rainbles ]

I apologize for the simple Tumblr-like photo post, but I've been very low on energy lately and at the moment, tired from a day of crafting.  This photo helps to remind me of the happiness, the peace and serenity that I felt when I was at one of my favorite retreats on the island, Moanalua Gardens.  I hope that seeing this helps to release some feel good endorphins in your brain.  I wish that I could post pictures on the things that I'm working on, but I'd hate to run the risk of having some people finding out what they're getting for Christmas.  xD

Tomorrow is another busy day, and the day that I put up my mini otaku-themed Christmas tree!  Please stay tuned for photos of that and the results from the photoshoot of the Spheal that I made for my Secret Santa Art Trade~!

Thanksgiving in Hawaii

It's not a Hawaii-style Thanksgiving plate without at least
quadruple-quintuple plus starch side dishes (I have 5 here),
which probably why Hawaii has some of the highest rates
of diabetes

Ah, Thanksgiving in Hawaii.  Since the 4th of July was long past, when I awoke to the all-too-familiar smell of smoke from a hibachi grill thick in the air, I knew that Thanksgiving day had finally arrived.  For most locals living here, Thanksgiving day typically means a full hearty plate of staples such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, corn... as well as rice, gun lo mein, sushi, sashimi, macaroni potato salad, taro/sweet bread rolls, hibachi-grilled foods, etc.

At my house, we always have a bottle of Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider/Grape Juice to toast at holiday meals and at least one form of pumpkin pie for dessert.  (Hawaii version:  Haupia (coconut) pumpkin pie, mmmm...)

-------------------------------------------------

For many Thanksgivings, my family and I would all pile (sometimes grudgingly) into the car often at least 30 minutes late to make that 20 minute drive over to my Grandparents' quiet house nestled on the side of the mountain directly overlooking Pearl Harbor after making a stop at Golden City for at least 2 orders of their awesome gun lo mein.

We would usually be the last to arrive to the smell of my uncle's hibachi already prepped and cooking, a smorgasbord of dishes laid out on the table along with my Grandparents' small rice cooker.  My Grandpa usually contributed an assortment of fruits for my sister and his favorite barbecue baby back ribs that were always unfailingly tasty and tender enough that the meat effortlessly and cleanly came off the bone.

My Aunty and Uncle from the other side of the island would usually bring sushi, sashimi, chow mein, (and to my dad's delight), a small ice cooler of beer.  If my other Aunty was currently staying here, she'd have her homemade cranberry jelly and her specialty, my mom's absolute favorite potato salad.

If the food wasn't ready yet, my sister and I would go to spend time with our cousin(s).  When my cousin Shinobu was living there, me, my sister, and our cousin Tory would watch anime on her computer, usually Naruto or Azumanga.  Back then, torrented anime was a fairly new practice, so only subbed videos were available though the internet.  Tory was fairly young still, so he often got very bored.

I find it somewhat ironic that several years later, after Shinobu moved to the mainland, that my sister and I would spend most Thanksgivings playing video games with Tory, one of which was a Naruto game.  (He really got into it after it aired on Cartoon Network, I wonder if he remembered that he actually had watched it before? xD )

After getting bored of anime or playing games and waiting for our rides home to finish talking, we would often go out on the lanai (patio) overlooking a sea of trees to play darts (largely disregarding the rules) on the old dartboard.  Sitting out there, it felt like you were high in a treehouse in the forest, far away from civilization

-------------------------------------------------

A little over two years ago now, our family suffered a great loss, the sudden passing of my Grandpa.  He was always a very quiet and gentle man, yet not untalkative and with an unexpectedly lighthearted and charming sense of humor; he exuded very little presence in a physical sense, but he was an essential type of glue and foundation stone that held our tiny family together.

Before his passing, we often took his role for granted, but now that we seem to be settling into our own new and lonely routines without gathering at the holidays, I at the very least have come to fully realize it.  But now, these family Thanksgiving/holiday gatherings that we always just assumed would continue indefinitely are nothing but slowly fading memories.

I hope that all of you were able to cherish any time that you got to spend with the friends and family that you care about this Thanksgiving, even if you weren't the most enthusiastic about seeing or spending time with them.  I wasn't able to to see my relatives, but I did get to spend time with my sister at home, spent some enjoyable time talking with a friend who came to drop off some Macys coupons, chatting with a friend though Pingchat throughout the day and playing Words with Friends with her.

After all, sometimes the most basic and simple things are the memories that you'll cherish and miss most in the future.  <3

Happy Thanksgiving 2011~!

Wishing a very happy Thanksgiving to all of you!  It's been quite a year, but even though things constantly change, the fact that I have so much to be grateful for hasn't changed at all.  On a micro to macro level, the things to be grateful for seem to be as countless as the stars in the sky, a fact that we can be grateful for in itself.

"...but it's a lonely little chain/if you don't add to it..."

But aside life in itself being a miracle, it would be a very lonely and difficult existence without the company of good friends and family.  For that reason, I am dedicating this post to some of the little and big things that my friends and family have done for me this year (and in the past) that I was truly thankful for.

----------------------------------------------

~Parents:  For all the delicious meals and food, for working hard to provide both necessary and unnecessary things (like gifts) for me and my sister, for taking my packages to the post office, taking me to appointments, etc, etc.  <3

~Sister:  It sure would be a lonely and miserable existence without you, even if you drive me absolutely crazy with your messes and carelessness and ... ok, I'll stop here.  xD

----------------------------------------------
Some acts of kindness and awesomeness by friends this year that were greatly appreciated

~Remembering and trying hard to keep her end of a trade, even though I told her that she didn't need to.  <3 (Mana)

Panda's Wishlist

A photo taken by my friend, Danyl, the display at Ala Moana Shopping Center!!
I reallllly want to go see it now! *o*  (soap snowflakes, lol)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of you have asked me what I wanted for this upcoming Christmas, so I thought that I'd make a general Panda Wishlist if any of you want ideas. Plus, I don't doing it just for fun.  =P  Because when it comes to gifts, even the simplest things can make me happy, and what I love most of all is when someone gives me something that they picked out/made/found because they thought especially of me.  <3  That in itself makes a gift incredibly valuable to me~

Hit the Ground Running

The leaders of the Sylvarian Myrmidon clan reunite in zOMG!
Busy, busy, busy.  I'm finally around 80% better, though, so I'm hoping that I can have a highly productive week!  Besides packing up and shipping out orders, making Christmas gifts and cards for my friends and family, I have to catch up on correspondence, accounting, updating my Etsy shop, planning the gift art thread with Habib and my personal traveling journal project, GAMING (Tibia, Minecraft, Maple story, Pokemon Black & Emerald, AC: CF,...), and not to mention all of my backlogged personal art projects, books, movies... !

Ahhhhh, my Cash shop items in Maple are going to expire at the end of next month!  Dx

★★★★★★★★★★★★★ETSY   ★★★★★★★

the original necklace that I wanted.  Now that I look
at it again, they were cheapy for just putting it on
a ball chain necklace  >_>
Good gravy, with the Etsy iTouch app, night-long browsing binges on Etsy just became so much easier (and dangerous).  Last night, I found myself crouched on the floor next to the plug (my iTouch battery died), my iTouch screen and countless Etsy listings glowing in the darkness of an unholy early hour of the morning.

If it weren't for the coughing fits that kept me weighed down to Earth, I would have been on an Etsy high, my eyes perusing the aesthetics and details of literally hundreds and hundreds of listings.  I like to do this once in a while (though these binges always seem to be pretty spontaneous) as a way to revitalize and respark my creativity, to inundate my brain with a plethora of textures, colors, forms, styles, materials, shapes, textures.

My original intent last night was to get some ideas for Christmas gifts, but it turned into a full-blown Etsy binge and I had the added bonus of finding the original supplier of the star and star key padlock set that I had been wanting to get in the form of a necklace that was sold before a friend could buy it for me, and at the fraction of the cost!

And I also found heart padlock and key sets from necklaces that was also on my wishlist (and for around 3-4x the base price), so I bought that too.  All in all, I bought 3 padlock and key sets for around the same price as that the one necklace on my wishlist would have cost. So, so, so happy.  *w*  ...Now to wait for my purchases to come in the mail.  >o<;

--------------------------------------------------

I've been combing Etsy for at least 2 years now, and while I have an album on Facebook dedicated to some of my favorite finds, I want to make a more public treasury of sorts, so over the next few weeks, I'll be posting themed mini-treasuries from my personal collection.  Enjoy~

★★★★★★★★★★★★★TECH   ★★★★★★★
iTouch/iPhone/iPad Apps

Once in a while, I make it a point to check the "Top Apps" in the iTunes store to see what's new.  Here's 4 that caught my interest:

--MINECRAFT: POCKET EDITION

"Use blocks to create masterpieces as you travel, hangout with friends, sit at the park, the possibilities are endless. Move beyond the limits of your computer and play Minecraft everywhere you go.

* Randomized worlds
* Build anything you can imagine
* Build with 36 different kinds of blocks
* Invite and play with friends to your world (local wireless network)
* Save multi-player worlds on your own phone"

Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.  M-m-m-m-minecraft?!  O_______O  $6.99??  Even though it seems somewhat limited in scope compared to the real thing, this app combined with my other apps would make it so that I would never put down my poor iTouch.

I mean, they have apps for almost all the major websites (apart from the actual Safari app) that I frequent (Facebook, Gaia, YouTube, Crunchyroll, MangaFox, pixiv, Craftgawker, Photobucket, USPS, and now Etsy <3) an email app, photo editing/drawing apps, a Pokedex (though now taken down from the app store by Apple), and Skype... all that's missing is Maple Story, Restaurant city, and improvements to the Gaia app.  =P

--SCRIBBLENAUTS:  REMIX

For some reason, it never occurred to me that they would release this title for the iTouch/iPhone/iPad, so I felt almost as startled by seeing this on the apps list as Minecraft.

I never did finish the first DS title of this game, but this seems like this could be a lot of fun.  Four dollars and ninety-nine cents' worth of fun?  I'll leave that to other people to decide.

I'll admit that I never would have thought of a "giant rainbow hungry beaver" as a solution

--OREGON TRAIL

Ah, Oregon Trail.  Thinking of that game brings me back to my young elementary school days, when I'd spend many a lunch recess in the musty computer room filled with old trophies and yearbooks watching my friends play this computer classic.  My other thought associations with this game invariably have to do with death, especially by dysentery.  Conclusion?  Oregon Trail app for the iTouch/iPhone/iPad, experience death by dysentery ON THE GO!
